AOI’s Factory in Ningbo, China Recognized as “China National High Technology Enterprise”
NINGBO, CHINA, and SUGAR LAND, TX, USA, February 25, 2009 – Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AOI), a leading manufacturer of laser diodes, photodetectors, and optical modules for fiber optic communications systems, today announces that its factory in Ningbo, China has been awarded recognition as a “China National High Technology Enterprise” (a “high-tech company”) by the government of the People’s Republic of China.
This award recognizes the achievements of the highest-quality high technology companies operating in China. In addition to the recognition, the award comes with a package of direct grants to support research and development in China, as well as tax
advantages. Strict requirements have been established by both the Chinese central government and the local authorities in the City of Ningbo, including requirements that:
- Research and development activities must be conducted in one of the eight technology areas identified as critical by the Chinese government.
- 30% of staff at high-tech companies must have a college diploma and technical staff with technology-related diplomas must account for more than 10% of the company's total staff
- High-tech companies must spend no less than 3%, 4% or 6%, respectively, of their annual sales income in the most recent year on research and development
- The income from high-tech products or services must account for more than 60% of the company's total income
